Abstract:Against the background of the application-oriented transformation of local undergraduate universities, this study focuses on the major of Journalism and Communication and explores the matching issue between curriculum objectives and students’ employability. By analyzing the core value of their matching, the study reveals the current status quo, such as the insufficient adaptation of curriculum objectives to media technologies and the loose connection between practical teaching and employment scenarios. The research proposes strategies including reconstructing the curriculum system based on the post competency model and innovating practical approaches through scenario-based teaching, so as to provide references for enhancing the accurate alignment between professional talent cultivation and industry demands.
Keywords:Local Undergraduate Universities; Journalism and Communication; Curriculum Objectives; Employability; Matching Degree
Under the strategic guidance of the transformation of local undergraduate universities towards application orientation, the technological innovation in the media industry has put forward higher requirements for professionals in the field of Journalism and Communication. As the core guideline for talent cultivation, the matching degree between curriculum objectives and employability directly affects the effectiveness of the transformation and students’ career development. Currently, the problem of disconnection between talent cultivation and industry demands in this field urgently needs to be solved. Therefore, in-depth exploration of the matching logic and optimization paths of the two is of great practical significance for promoting professional construction and the supply of talents in the industry.
1.The Core Value of Matching Between CurriculumObjectives and Employability in the Major of Journalism and Communication
The application-oriented nature of Journalism and Communication determines that its curriculum system must develop in step with the industry. As the top-level design of talent cultivation, the matching degree between curriculum objectives and employability is directly related to the effectiveness of the discipline transformation. By clarifying the corresponding relationship between curriculum objectives and employability, the major of Journalism and Communication in local undergraduate universities can break the predicament of disconnection between traditional theoretical teaching and practice. It integrates core employability elements such as media technology application and content innovation into the entire process of curriculum design, enabling the discipline development to not only maintain a theoretical foundation but also highlight practical characteristics, thus achieving an accurate transformation from an academic-oriented model to an application-oriented one.
2.Current Status and Problems of the Matching Between Curriculum Objectives and Employability in the Major of Journalism and Communication in Local Undergraduate Universities
2.1 Insufficient Adaptability of Curriculum Objectives to Media Technologies
At present, the curriculum objectives of the Journalism and Communication major in some local undergraduate universities still focus on the cultivation of traditional journalism theories and editing skills, with insufficient integration of emerging media technologies. In the curriculum setup, traditional courses such as “Introduction to Journalism” and “News Interview and Writing” account for a relatively high proportion, while the curriculum objective design for cutting-edge content such as AI news production, big data public opinion analysis, and live broadcast technology application is relatively vague.
2.2Loose Connection Between Practical Teaching and Employment Scenarios
Practical teaching is a key link connecting curriculum objectives and employability. However, there are many problems in the practical teaching of the Journalism and Communication major in current local undergraduate universities. The practical requirements set in the curriculum objectives are mostly based on simulation training and in-class practical exercises, lacking connection with real employment scenarios. The construction of practice bases in some universities is merely a formality, and the practical projects that students participate in are mostly simple content transfer, making it difficult for them to access the complete process of project planning, implementation, and review.
3.Strategies to Improve the Matching Degree Between Curriculum Objectives and Employability in the Major of Journalism and Communication
3.1Reconstruct the Curriculum Objective System Based on the Post Competency Model
Constructing a scientific post competency model is a prerequisite for achieving accurate matching between curriculum objectives and employability. Local undergraduate universities should cooperate with mainstream media, new media enterprises, and other institutions in the region to conduct comprehensive post demand surveys, sort out the knowledge, skills, and literacy required for core positions in the Journalism and Communication major, and form a systematic post competency model. On this basis, the curriculum objective system should be reconstructed, and post competency requirements should be decomposed into specific courses. For example, for the position of short video operation, the curriculum objectives should clearly specify the competency requirements such as short video script creation, shooting and editing, and traffic operation.
3.2Innovate Practical Cultivation Paths Through Scenario-Based Teaching
Scenario-based teaching can effectively narrow the gap between course learning and actual workplace situations, and improve students’ practical abilities. Local undergraduate universities should break the limitations of traditional classroom teaching and build a practical teaching model based on real work scenarios. By cooperating with media enterprises, real projects of enterprises should be introduced into the classroom, allowing students to master the skills required for positions in the process of project implementation. For example, cooperate with local converged media centers to carry out regional news reporting projects, enabling students to participate in the entire process of topic selection and planning, interview and shooting, editing and release.
Conclusion:
The study shows that the accurate matching between curriculum objectives and students’ employability in the Journalism and Communication major of local undergraduate universities is the key to the application-oriented transformation. Aiming at the existing problems such as lagging technology adaptation and insufficient practical connection, strategies such as constructing a post-oriented curriculum system and promoting scenario-based practical teaching can effectively improve the quality of talent cultivation. In the future, it is necessary to continuously strengthen school-enterprise cooperation, establish a dynamic adjustment mechanism, so that the curriculum design always conforms to the development needs of the industry, and deliver application-oriented talents with sustainable employability to the media industry, thereby promoting the formation of a positive interaction between professional transformation and industry development.
